List of Popes Timeline: From Peter to Leo XIV
All 267 pontificates in the Vatican’s official list of the Supreme Pontiffs, from Peter to Leo XIV, the pope as of 17 October 2026, on one chart with the antipopes and the councils and schisms that shaped the office. The dates are the Vatican’s own. The early dates are traditional and uncertain: for the first two centuries the list often gives two possible years, and until the 4th century the popes were usually known only as bishops of Rome. The Papacy’s Claims and the Responses
The Catholic Church teaches that “the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the ‘rock’ of his Church,” gave him the keys, and made him shepherd of the whole flock (Matthew 16:18–19). It teaches that the pope, as Bishop of Rome and Peter’s successor, has “full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church.” The First Vatican Council defined papal primacy and papal infallibility as dogma in 1870. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 881–882; Papal Infallibility)
Scholars broadly agree that Peter was in Rome in the middle of the 1st century. Britannica notes that Catholic scholarship has acknowledged that the idea of Peter as “the first pope” is built on a tenuous historical basis. About 255 Stephen I became the first bishop of Rome to cite Matthew 16:18 for a special role of the see of Rome. (Petrine Theory)
The Eastern Orthodox churches hold that the bishop of Rome had a primacy of honor in the first millennium, which, in the words of the Moscow Patriarchate, Orthodox theologians believed was “instituted not by God but men.” The same statement says the Orthodox Church “rejected the doctrine of the Roman Church on papal primacy and the divine origin of the power of the first bishop in the Universal Church,” and that after communion between Rome and Constantinople broke in the 11th century, primacy of honor passed to Constantinople. Britannica adds that Rome’s idea of what its preeminence involved was never acknowledged in the East. The mutual excommunications of 1054 were lifted in 1965. (Position of the Moscow Patriarchate on the Problem of Primacy in the Universal Church; East-West Schism)
The Protestant confessions deny the pope’s authority over the whole church. Luther’s Smalcald Articles (1537) say the pope is not, “according to divine law or according to the Word of God the head of all Christendom,” but “only the bishop and pastor of the Church at Rome.” The Westminster Confession, in the form kept by the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, says: “There is no other head of the church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof.” Luther, who had argued that the pope had no authority over purgatory, was excommunicated in 1521. (The Smalcald Articles, Part II, Article IV: Of the Papacy; The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 25; Reformation)
All three traditions confess the Nicene Creed and one God in three persons, though East and West still differ over the Western addition of the Filioque (“and the Son”). The dispute over the papacy is about the authority of the church and its bishops. This page lists the popes as the Vatican counts them and labels rival claimants as antipopes, without taking a side on the claims. (Nicene Creed)

How the Dates Are Shown
Years are AD. Dates are the Vatican list’s beginning and end of each pontificate. Each entry quotes the list as printed: day.month.year with the month in Roman numerals, “...” where the day or month is unknown, and “or” where the list gives two possible years. The chart draws the widest range the list allows, so a span can overlap its neighbors. “About” marks the early pontificates whose years are traditional.
The antipopes are the rival claimants Britannica lists, set in italics there and labelled “Antipope” here. Which claimant counts as pope in a disputed election is the Catholic Church’s own judgment, followed here as the Vatican list records it.
Each row is one list: the popes in the Vatican’s order, the antipopes Britannica lists, and key events.
