Latter-day Saints believe in God the Eternal Father, in his Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost, and they add the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price as scripture beside the Bible. Those three books are Latter-day Saint scripture. Nicene Christians confess one God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of one substance. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches three beings, one in purpose.

## Key points

- [Articles of Faith 1:1](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p1) [(1)](#ref-1), in the Pearl of Great Price, says they believe in God the Eternal Father, and in his Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
- [Articles of Faith 1:8](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p8) says the Bible is the word of God as far as it is translated correctly, and the Book of Mormon is the word of God. [(1)](#ref-1)
- Gospel Topics, Jesus Christ, calls Jesus the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, who created the earth under the direction of his Father, and the Firstborn of the Father. [(6)](#ref-6) The church’s Bible Dictionary says Jehovah is the premortal Jesus Christ. [(9)](#ref-9)
- Gospel Topics, Satan, calls Satan a spirit son of God who rebelled. [(7)](#ref-7) [Moses 4:1](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/moses/4?lang=eng&id=1), Pearl of Great Price, has Satan ask for the Father’s honor, and the next verse has the Beloved Son say the glory is the Father’s. [(8)](#ref-8) Those pages do not print the phrase spirit brother.
- Gospel Topics, Baptisms for the Dead, says a living member may be baptized for someone who has died, and that the dead person must accept it. [(10)](#ref-10) [1 Corinthians 15:29](/bible/1-corinthians/15/29) is Paul’s question in a chapter about the resurrection. [(19)](#ref-19)
- [2 Nephi 25:23](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/25?lang=eng&id=23), Book of Mormon, says they are saved by grace after all they can do. [(12)](#ref-12) [Ephesians 2:8–9](/bible/ephesians/2) says salvation is the gift of God, not of works. [(18)](#ref-18)
- [Do Mormons believe in the Trinity?](/latter-day-saints/the-godhead-in-latter-day-saint-teaching), [Are Mormons Christians?](/latter-day-saints/are-mormons-christians), and [Do Mormons believe they will become gods?](/latter-day-saints/do-mormons-believe-they-will-become-gods) stay on those claims.

## Should I say Mormon or Latter-day Saint?

The church’s style guide says the full name is preferred, that “Mormon Church” is not an authorized title, and that the term “Mormonism” is inaccurate and should not be used. [(3)](#ref-3) “Mormon” remains correct in the name Book of Mormon. Russell M. Nelson, in the October 2018 general conference, said the Savior named the church. [(2)](#ref-2) On [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2018/10/the-correct-name-of-the-church?lang=eng):

> Joseph Smith did not name the Church restored through him; neither did Mormon. It was the Savior Himself who said, “For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

He also said that if someone asks, “Are you a Mormon?” a member could reply that if the question means a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, yes. This page uses Mormon because that is the question people ask, and then it uses the church’s name.

## How do Latter-day Saints worship?

They meet on Sunday and partake of the sacrament. Gospel Topics, Sacrament, says members partake of bread and water in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice and renew the covenants of baptism. [(4)](#ref-4) The prayers are in [Doctrine and Covenants 20:77 and 20:79](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/20?lang=eng&id=77), Latter-day Saint scripture. The prayer on the bread addresses God the Eternal Father in the name of his Son. [(5)](#ref-5) On [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/20?lang=eng&id=77):

> O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

[Articles of Faith 1:4](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p4) names faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. [(1)](#ref-1) [Articles of Faith 1:3](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p3) says that through the Atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. Temples are for ordinances the church says the dead may still receive, taken up below. Christmas and Easter are on [Do Mormons celebrate Christmas and Easter?](/latter-day-saints/do-mormons-celebrate-christmas-and-easter). The health code is on [Why can’t Mormons drink coffee?](/latter-day-saints/why-cant-mormons-drink-coffee).

## Do Latter-day Saints believe the Bible?

They say they do, with a limit they print themselves. [Articles of Faith 1:8](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p8) [(1)](#ref-1), on [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p8):

> We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

That sentence is Latter-day Saint scripture in the Pearl of Great Price. It does not say the Bible was lost and rewritten. It says translation can fail, and it sets the Book of Mormon beside the Bible as the word of God. The Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price stand with it. [Joseph Smith and Revelation](/latter-day-saints/joseph-smith-and-revelation) and [The Book of Mormon](/latter-day-saints/the-book-of-mormon) take up those books. [Who wrote the Book of Mormon?](/latter-day-saints/who-wrote-the-book-of-mormon) stays on the church’s account of the plates and the translation. [Is the Bible true?](/christianity/is-the-bible-true) and [Who wrote the Bible?](/christianity/who-wrote-the-bible) are the Christian account of the biblical books. The claim that the text was corrupted is a different claim, answered on [Has the Bible Been Changed?](/christianity/was-the-bible-corrupted).

## Are Jesus and Lucifer spirit brothers?

The pages quoted here do not use that slogan. They do say something a Nicene Christian does not say.

Gospel Topics, Jesus Christ, prints “The Living Christ,” from the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve on January 1, 2000. It says his life neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world. [(6)](#ref-6) Gospel Topics, Satan, says Satan is a spirit son of God who was once an angel in authority in the presence of God, and that in the premortal Council in Heaven, Lucifer, as Satan was then called, rebelled against God. [(7)](#ref-7)

[Moses 4:1](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/moses/4?lang=eng&id=1) is Pearl of Great Price, Latter-day Saint scripture, not the book of Genesis. [(8)](#ref-8) On [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/moses/4?lang=eng&id=1):

> And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.

The next verse says the Beloved Son said, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.” Satan rebelled, sought to destroy the agency of man, and was cast down. The church’s reading is that Jesus and Satan both stood in that council as sons, and one rebelled. [Are Mormons Christians?](/latter-day-saints/are-mormons-christians) states the same pages.

Nicene Christianity does not say that. Satan is a creature who fell. The Son is begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, in the [creed of 381](https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/3808.htm). [(23)](#ref-23) [John 1:1](/bible/john/1/1) says the Word was God. [(17)](#ref-17) [John 1:3](/bible/john/1) says all things were made by him. A being through whom all things were made is not one more spirit child in a family that includes the devil. [Is Jesus God?](/christianity/is-jesus-god) follows that claim.

## Are Elohim and Jehovah two beings?

In the church’s Bible Dictionary, Jehovah is the premortal Jesus Christ and came to earth being born of Mary. [(9)](#ref-9) The Living Christ declaration says he was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New, and that under the direction of his Father he was the creator of the earth. [(6)](#ref-6) A footnote on Articles of Faith 1:1 labels “God the Father, Elohim.” The dictionary says latter-day revelation, including the Joseph Smith Translation of Exodus 6:3, differs from Exodus 6:3 as the Bible prints it. The Joseph Smith Translation is Joseph Smith’s revision. It is not the Hebrew text and it is not the King James Version.

[Do Mormons believe in the Trinity?](/latter-day-saints/the-godhead-in-latter-day-saint-teaching) quotes [Doctrine and Covenants 130:22](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/130?lang=eng&id=22): the Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s, the Son also, and the Holy Ghost is a personage of Spirit. Gospel Topics, Godhead, says the three are separate beings, one in purpose and doctrine.

[Isaiah 44:6](/bible/isaiah/44/6) [(20)](#ref-20), on [that page](/bible/isaiah/44/6):

> Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

The LORD in that sentence is one speaker. [Isaiah 43:10](/bible/isaiah/43/10) says that before him there was no God formed, neither shall there be after him. [Deuteronomy 6:4](/bible/deuteronomy/6/4) says the LORD our God is one LORD. [(22)](#ref-22) [John 4:24](/bible/john/4/24) says God is a Spirit. [Matthew 28:19](/bible/matthew/28/19) names the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost in one baptismal name. [(21)](#ref-21) [The Trinity](/christianity/the-trinity) is that confession: one God, not two Gods called Elohim and Jehovah. [1 Corinthians 8:6](/bible/1-corinthians/8) is Paul’s argument that there is one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ, against idols. It does not teach two gods.

## What is baptism for the dead?

Gospel Topics, Baptisms for the Dead, says Jesus taught that baptism is essential, that many people died without it, and that proxy baptism in a temple offers them the blessing. [(10)](#ref-10) The page says deceased persons are not baptized into the church against their will. The validity of the ordinance depends on the dead person accepting it. It says the New Testament indicates that baptisms for the dead were done during the time of the Apostle Paul, and that the ordinance was restored with this church.

[Doctrine and Covenants 128:18](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/128?lang=eng&id=18) is Joseph Smith’s epistle of September 7, 1842. [(11)](#ref-11) Verse 16 quotes 1 Corinthians 15:29. Verse 18 says the subject of that welding link between the fathers and the children is the baptism for the dead.

[1 Corinthians 15:29](/bible/1-corinthians/15/29) sits in a chapter whose claim is that Christ has been raised. [(19)](#ref-19) Paul asks what those people will do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead are not raised at all. The verse does not describe a temple font, a list of names, or a command to baptize the living for named relatives. The King James sentence is a question inside the argument for the resurrection, which [The Resurrection of Jesus](/christianity/resurrection-of-jesus) states from the Gospels.

## Are people saved by grace after all they can do?

[2 Nephi 25:23](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/25?lang=eng&id=23) is Book of Mormon, Latter-day Saint scripture. [(12)](#ref-12) On [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/25?lang=eng&id=23):

> For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

The same chapter says they talk of Christ, rejoice in Christ, and preach of Christ. Grace is in the sentence. So is “after all we can do.”

Gospel Topics, Grace, says grace is the divine help or strength extended through the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that through his grace everyone who has lived will be resurrected. [(13)](#ref-13) It also says that to receive this enabling power a person must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes faith in him, repentance, baptism, the gift of the Holy Ghost, and trying to follow his teachings for the rest of life. [Articles of Faith 1:3](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=eng&id=p3) ties salvation to obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. [(1)](#ref-1)

[Ephesians 2:8–9](/bible/ephesians/2) says that by grace you are saved through faith, and that this is not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. [(18)](#ref-18) The Book of Mormon sentence puts grace after all we can do. The apostle’s sentence says the gift is not of works. [Do Mormons believe they will become gods?](/latter-day-saints/do-mormons-believe-they-will-become-gods) follows that hope into exaltation. [What is the difference between Mormons and Catholics?](/latter-day-saints/what-is-the-difference-between-mormons-and-catholics) sets the same sentence beside the Catholic confession.

## Can Latter-day Saints be LGBTQ?

Gospel Topics, Same-Sex Attraction, distinguishes same-sex attraction from homosexual behavior. [(14)](#ref-14) On [that page](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/same-sex-attraction?lang=eng):

> The Church distinguishes between same-sex attraction and homosexual behavior. People who experience same-sex attraction or identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual can make and keep covenants with God and fully and worthily participate in the Church. Identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual or experiencing same-sex attraction is not a sin and does not prohibit one from participating in the Church, holding callings, or attending the temple.

Gospel Topics, Chastity, says chastity means not having any sexual relations outside a legal marriage between a man and a woman, and that same-sex marriage and sexual relations between those of the same sex are against God’s commandments. [(15)](#ref-15) A March 2014 letter of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve says sexual relations are proper only between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife, and that church officers will not perform marriages between two people of the same sex. [(16)](#ref-16) The same letter says the gospel teaches love and kindness even when people disagree. [Do Mormons practice polygamy?](/latter-day-saints/do-mormons-practice-polygamy) is the church’s account of marriage in the nineteenth century and of the rule now.

## Frequently asked questions

### What do Mormons believe about God?

Three beings, one in purpose: the Father and the Son with bodies of flesh and bones, and the Holy Ghost a personage of spirit. [Do Mormons believe in the Trinity?](/latter-day-saints/the-godhead-in-latter-day-saint-teaching) quotes Doctrine and Covenants 130:22. The creed of 381 says the Son is of one substance with the Father.

### Do Mormons believe in Jesus?

Yes. Gospel Topics calls him the Savior, the Firstborn of the Father, and the Great Jehovah. The disagreement is whether that Son is one being with the Father, which [John 1:1](/bible/john/1/1) says of the Word, or a separate being who once stood in a council with Lucifer.

### Can Mormons wear deodorant?

The Word of Wisdom pages name alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and, in the church’s 2019 statement, vaping, green tea, and coffee-based products. They do not name deodorant. [Why can’t Mormons drink coffee?](/latter-day-saints/why-cant-mormons-drink-coffee) stays on what those pages do say.

### Which religion is declining the fastest in the United States?

This page does not publish a growth ranking. The question it can answer is what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches, in the church’s own texts, and where that teaching differs from the Nicene confession.
