Allah is the name the Qur’an uses for the one God, Lord of the worlds, who has no son. The God of the Bible is one, and he is the Father of Jesus Christ, who is God. Sharing a word, or a Semitic root, is not the same confession.

[Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God?](/islam/do-muslims-and-christians-worship-the-same-god) and [Tawhid and Christian Monotheism](/islam/tawhid-and-christian-monotheism) compare the two confessions. This page is about the name, the claim that Jesus said it, and how the Qur’an describes the one it names.

## Key points

- [Qur’an 1:2](https://quran.com/1/2) (Saheeh International) gives praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Qur’an 3:18](https://quran.com/3/18) says there is no deity except him.
- [Qur’an 112:1–4](https://quran.com/112/1-4) says he is one, he neither begets nor is born, and there is no equivalent to him.
- [Qur’an 5:72](https://quran.com/5/72) calls it disbelief to say that Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary.
- [Mark 15:34](/bible/mark/15/34) records Jesus’ cry as “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” and translates it “My God, my God.” The verse does not print the Arabic word Allah.
- [John 1:1](/bible/john/1/1) says the Word was God. [Deuteronomy 6:4](/bible/deuteronomy/6/4) says the Lord our God is one Lord.

## What does the Qur’an say about Allah?

The opening of the Qur’an addresses him as Lord of the worlds. [Qur’an 1:2](https://quran.com/1/2) says praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Qur’an 3:18](https://quran.com/3/18) (Saheeh International):

> Allāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

[Qur’an 2:255](https://quran.com/2/255) says there is no deity except him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, that neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes him, and that no one intercedes with him except by his permission. [Qur’an 112:1–4](https://quran.com/112/1-4) says he is one, the Eternal Refuge, he neither begets nor is born, and there is none equivalent to him. Square brackets in Saheeh International are the translator’s explanations.

Muhammad is the messenger of that God in the Muslim confession, not a second god. [Who Was Muhammad?](/islam/who-was-muhammad) [What Do Muslims Believe?](/islam/what-do-muslims-believe)

## What did Jesus say about Allah?

[Mark 15:34](/bible/mark/15/34) (King James Version) records the cry from the cross and gives the translation in the same verse:

> And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

The King James translates that cry as “My God.” It does not record the Arabic word Allah, and it does not say that Jesus was naming the God of the Qur’an. A related Semitic word for God is often cited beside this verse. The verse’s own translation is “My God.” [My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?](/islam/my-god-my-god-why-have-you-forsaken-me)

The Qur’an denies the claim those words sit inside. Jesus is crying to his Father from the cross. [Qur’an 4:157](https://quran.com/4/157) is read as a denial that he was crucified. [Did Jesus Die on the Cross?](/islam/did-jesus-die-on-the-cross)

## Does the Qur’an call Allah the Father of Jesus?

No. [Qur’an 5:72](https://quran.com/5/72) (Saheeh International) calls it disbelief to identify Allah with the Messiah:

> They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allāh is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allāh, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allāh - Allāh has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

[Qur’an 4:171](https://quran.com/4/171) says Jesus was a messenger and a word from God directed to Mary, tells the People of the Scripture not to say “Three,” and says God is exalted above having a son. [Qur’an 5:73](https://quran.com/5/73) calls it disbelief to say Allah is the third of three. [Qur’an 9:30](https://quran.com/9/30) rejects the Christian statement that the Messiah is the son of God. [Can God Have a Son?](/islam/can-god-have-a-son) [Jesus in the Qur’an and the Gospels](/islam/jesus-in-the-quran-and-the-gospels)

## Is he the God of the Bible?

The Bible’s God is one. [Deuteronomy 6:4](/bible/deuteronomy/6/4) says the Lord our God is one Lord. The same Bible says the Word was with God and was God. [John 1:1](/bible/john/1/1) (King James Version):

> In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

[John 20:28](/bible/john/20/28) records Thomas calling the risen Jesus Lord and God. The Qur’an uses the name Allah for a God who neither begets nor is begotten. The Christian confession uses the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for the one God. [The Trinity](/christianity/the-trinity) [The Deity of Christ](/christianity/deity-of-christ) [Is Jesus God?](/christianity/is-jesus-god)

[Qur’an 29:46](https://quran.com/29/46) tells them to say that our God and your God is one. That sentence is discussed on [Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God?](/islam/do-muslims-and-christians-worship-the-same-god), beside the verses that deny the Son.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the 7 7 7 rule in Islam?

The Qur’an does not state a rule under that name. [Qur’an 2:29](https://quran.com/2/29) says he made seven heavens. A numbered social rule is not that verse.

### What is the worst sin in Islam?

Association of anyone with God. [Qur’an 4:48](https://quran.com/4/48) says God does not forgive association with him. [What Do Muslims Believe?](/islam/what-do-muslims-believe)

### Does Allah accept same-sex desire?

[Qur’an 7:80](https://quran.com/7/80) and [Qur’an 7:81](https://quran.com/7/81) have Lot charge his people with approaching men with desire instead of women, and call that a transgression. The verses are about that act.

### Which is true, the Qur’an or the Bible?

[The Islamic Dilemma](/islam/the-islamic-dilemma) states the problem in the Qur’an’s own words: it tells the People of the Gospel to judge by the Gospel, and it denies what that Gospel says about the cross and about who Jesus is. [Does the Qur’an Confirm the Bible?](/islam/does-the-quran-confirm-the-bible) [Was the Bible Corrupted?](/islam/was-the-bible-corrupted) [What Is the Injil?](/islam/what-is-the-injil)

The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers.
