The Hebrew Bible names God with a few words and many combinations of them. Elohim, “God,” is the first in [Genesis 1:1](/bible/genesis/1/1). YHWH, the personal name, is printed LORD in the King James Version. Adonai means Lord. El, “God” or “mighty one,” is joined to other words to make El Shaddai (God Almighty), El Elyon (God Most High), El Olam (the everlasting God), and El Roi (the God who sees). This page gives each name with its Hebrew, Strong’s number, meaning, first occurrence, and key verses, and links the names with pages of their own.
