The Bible calls the Holy Spirit the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the LORD, the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of Christ, and the eternal Spirit, among other titles. The King James Version uses “Holy Ghost” in the New Testament and “holy Spirit” in a few verses of both Testaments; they translate the same words. This page lists {titleCount} titles with the King James verses, {verseCount} verses in all.

## Key Points

- The Greek word for Spirit is πνεῦμα, wind or breath, and the Hebrew is <HebrewWord strong="H7307" gloss="spirit, wind, breath" />, with the same range. [(2)](#ref-2)
- Jesus calls the Spirit “another Comforter” in [John 14:16](/bible/john/14/16). The Greek παράκλητος is the same word translated “advocate” of Jesus in [1 John 2:1](/bible/1-john/2/1).
- The Spirit is called “the Spirit of God” in [Genesis 1:2](/bible/genesis/1/2) and [Romans 8:9](/bible/romans/8/9), and “the Spirit of Christ” in the same verse.
- In [Acts 5:3–4](/bible/acts/5/3) Peter says Ananias lied “to the Holy Ghost” and “not unto men, but unto God.”
- [Isaiah 11:2](/bible/isaiah/11/2) names the spirit of the LORD as the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the LORD.
- The titles follow Torrey’s New Topical Textbook. [(1)](#ref-1)
