The Bible gives Jesus many names and titles. He is called God ([John 20:28](/bible/john/20/28)), the Son of God ([Matthew 16:16](/bible/matthew/16/16)), the Son of man ([Daniel 7:13](/bible/daniel/7/13); [Mark 14:62](/bible/mark/14/62)), the Word ([John 1:1](/bible/john/1/1)), the Christ or Messiah ([John 1:41](/bible/john/1/41)), the Lamb of God ([John 1:29](/bible/john/1/29)), Emmanuel ([Matthew 1:23](/bible/matthew/1/23)), and Alpha and Omega ([Revelation 22:13](/bible/revelation/22/13)). This page lists {titleCount} titles with the Greek or Hebrew and the King James verses, {verseCount} verses in all, and a table of titles the Old Testament gives the LORD and the New Testament gives Jesus.

## Key Points

- Jesus is a name; Christ is a title. Christ is the Greek Χριστός, “anointed,” the same meaning as the Hebrew Messiah. [John 1:41](/bible/john/1/41) says, “We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.” See [What Does Messiah Mean?](/christianity/what-does-messiah-mean)
- “Son of man” is the title Jesus uses of himself most often. It comes from [Daniel 7:13](/bible/daniel/7/13), which he quotes before the high priest in [Mark 14:62](/bible/mark/14/62).
- [Isaiah 9:6](/bible/isaiah/9/6) names the child who is born: Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The same Hebrew for “the mighty God” is used of the LORD in [Isaiah 10:21](/bible/isaiah/10/21).
- In [Isaiah 44:6](/bible/isaiah/44/6) the LORD says, “I am the first, and I am the last.” In [Revelation 22:13](/bible/revelation/22/13) the speaker who comes quickly says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”
- Several titles of the LORD, among them Shepherd, Saviour, Rock, and Lord of lords, are given to Jesus. The pairs are in the table below. [(1)](#ref-1)
- His seven “I am” sayings in John have their own page, [The I AM Statements of Jesus](/god/i-am-statements-of-jesus).

## Titles of Deity

<TitleTable category={category('divine-titles')} />

The Greek for Son of God is υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, and for Lord κύριος, the word the Greek Old Testament used for the divine name. The case that these titles mean Jesus is God is [What Is the Deity of Christ?](/christianity/deity-of-christ) and [Is Jesus God?](/christianity/is-jesus-god)

## Titles of the Messiah

## Titles of His Work

<TitleTable category={category('saviour-and-priest')} />

## Titles Shared With YHWH

The Old Testament gives these titles and works to the LORD, YHWH, and the New Testament gives them to Jesus. The pairs follow Torrey’s “Christ is God.” [(1)](#ref-1) Each row prints both King James verses.

The New World Translation (Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Bible) renders several of these New Testament verses differently. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What Is the Difference Between Jesus and Christ?

Jesus, Ἰησοῦς, is his name, the Greek form of Joshua. Christ is a title, “the anointed one.” [Matthew 1:21](/bible/matthew/1/21) gives the reason for the name: “he shall save his people from their sins.”

### What Does Son of Man Mean?

In the Gospels it is how Jesus refers to himself. In [Daniel 7:13–14](/bible/daniel/7/13) one “like the Son of man” comes with the clouds of heaven and receives an everlasting dominion.

### Who Is the Alpha and Omega?

Revelation gives the title in [Revelation 1:8](/bible/revelation/1/8), [Revelation 21:6](/bible/revelation/21/6), and [Revelation 22:13](/bible/revelation/22/13). See [Who Is the Alpha and Omega?](/jehovahs-witnesses/who-is-the-alpha-and-omega)
