The I AM statements of Jesus are the sayings in the Gospel of John where Jesus says ἐγώ εἰμι, “I am.” Seven have a predicate: the bread of life ([John 6:35](/bible/john/6/35)), the light of the world ([John 8:12](/bible/john/8/12)), the door ([John 10:9](/bible/john/10/9)), the good shepherd ([John 10:11](/bible/john/10/11)), the resurrection and the life ([John 11:25](/bible/john/11/25)), the way, the truth, and the life ([John 14:6](/bible/john/14/6)), and the true vine ([John 15:1](/bible/john/15/1)). In others Jesus says “I am” with no predicate, most famously “Before Abraham was, I am” in [John 8:58](/bible/john/8/58). This page prints all of them with the Old Testament “I am” sayings of the LORD, {total} verses.

## Key Points

- ἐγώ is “I” (Strong’s G1473) and εἰμι is “I am” (G1510). Greek does not need ἐγώ for “I am,” so the pronoun adds emphasis. [(1)](#ref-1)
- The seven sayings with a predicate are all in John, in chapters 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, and 15.
- In [John 8:58](/bible/john/8/58) Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I am,” and in [John 8:59](/bible/john/8/59) the hearers take up stones to cast at him.
- In [John 18:5–6](/bible/john/18/5), when Jesus answers “I am he,” the soldiers “went backward, and fell to the ground.” The King James adds “he” in italics; the Greek is ἐγώ εἰμι.
- God names himself “I AM THAT I AM” in [Exodus 3:14](/bible/exodus/3/14). In Isaiah the LORD says “I am he” ([Isaiah 43:10](/bible/isaiah/43/10)); the Greek Old Testament there reads ἐγώ εἰμι.
- [John 13:19](/bible/john/13/19), “that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he,” echoes [Isaiah 43:10](/bible/isaiah/43/10), “that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he.”

## The Seven I AM Sayings

{sayings.map(([name, refs]) => (<RefTable keys={keys(refs)} caption={name} />))}

## I AM With No Predicate

In these verses the Greek is ἐγώ εἰμι standing alone. The King James supplies “he” or translates “It is I.”

## I AM in the Old Testament

<RefTable keys={oldTestament} caption="The LORD Says I Am" />

The Hebrew of [Exodus 3:14](/bible/exodus/3/14) is the verb “to be,” and [Exodus 3:15](/bible/exodus/3/15) follows it with the divine name. See [What Is the Tetragrammaton?](/god/what-is-the-tetragrammaton)
