Christians say God exists: not as one more object inside the universe, but as the one on whom everything that exists depends. This page is that general question, and [Romans 1:20](/bible/romans/1/20) says that what may be known of God is seen through what has been made.

## Key points

- A careful atheist says the public evidence — the physical world, suffering, the history of religion, and experience — does not justify belief in the God Christians describe.
- The Christian claim is that God is not a gap inside physics. Contingency, moral life, and the life of Jesus are attempts to say why that claim is more than a mood.
- [Romans 1:19–20](/bible/romans/1) says the invisible things of God are understood by the things that are made.
- [Acts 17:24–25](/bible/acts/17) says God made the world and does not need to be served by human hands as though he needed anything.
- [Psalm 19:1](/bible/psalms/19/1) says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
- Suffering is argued on [the problem of evil](/god/problem-of-evil). What atheists say they believe is [What do atheists believe?](/atheism/what-do-atheists-believe). The historical claim about Jesus is [the resurrection](/christianity/resurrection-of-jesus).

## The doubt

“Does God exist?” covers more than one question. One person means “Is there a mind behind the world?” Another means “Why trust the church?” Another means “I have prayed and heard nothing.”

A careful atheist is not claiming to know a hidden drawer in the universe where God would have been found. They are saying the public evidence does not justify belief in the God Christians describe. Some add that “God” is a name people give to a gap, and that gaps have closed. That is a real position. It is not the same sentence as “you just want to sin.”

## The Christian claim

Christians do not think God is an object inside the universe, competing with physics for a slot. The claim is that everything that exists depends on a God who is not one more thing. Arguments from contingency, from the moral life, and from the life of Jesus are attempts to say why that claim is more than a mood. None of them is a machine that forces a conclusion.

[Romans 1:19–20](/bible/romans/1), King James Version:

> Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

That is an appeal to look at what has been made. It is not a lab report.

[Acts 17:24–25](/bible/acts/17): “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;”

If the objection already in view is suffering, the texts are on [the problem of evil](/god/problem-of-evil). If the objection is that Jesus is a legend, the texts are on [the resurrection](/christianity/resurrection-of-jesus). King James Version.

> [17:24] God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; [17:25] Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; [17:26] And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; [17:27] That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: [17:28] For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

### Psalms 19:1–4

King James Version.

> [19:1] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. [19:2] Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. [19:3] There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. [19:4] Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
