The cherubim and seraphim are the beings the Bible places around the throne of God. Ezekiel saw four living creatures, each with four faces and four wings, and later says “I knew that they were the cherubims” ([Ezekiel 10:20](/bible/ezekiel/10/20)). Isaiah saw seraphim, each with six wings, crying “Holy, holy, holy” ([Isaiah 6:2–3](/bible/isaiah/6/2)). Revelation 4 describes four beasts full of eyes, with six wings, who say the same words.

## Key Points

- Cherubim guard the way to the tree of life in [Genesis 3:24](/bible/genesis/3/24) and are made of gold over the mercy seat in [Exodus 25:18–22](/bible/exodus/25/18).
- In [Ezekiel 1:10](/bible/ezekiel/1/10) each creature has the face of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. In [Ezekiel 10:14](/bible/ezekiel/10/14) the first face is “the face of a cherub.”
- The seraphim are named only in [Isaiah 6](/bible/isaiah/6/2). Each has six wings: two cover the face, two the feet, and two fly.
- The four beasts of [Revelation 4:7–8](/bible/revelation/4/7) are like a lion, a calf, a man, and a flying eagle, each with six wings, saying “Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty.”
- Ezekiel’s creatures are under the throne and the likeness of a man above it. See [What Does God Look Like?](/god/what-does-god-look-like)

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Are Cherubim Babies With Wings?

Not in the Bible. Ezekiel’s cherubim have four faces, four wings, straight feet like a calf’s, and hands of a man under their wings ([Ezekiel 1:6–8](/bible/ezekiel/1/6)).

### Ezekiel 1:4–25

King James Version.

> [1:4] And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. [1:5] Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. [1:6] And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. [1:7] And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. [1:8] And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. [1:9] Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. [1:10] As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. [1:11] Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. [1:12] And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. [1:13] As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. [1:14] And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. [1:15] Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. [1:16] The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. [1:17] When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. [1:18] As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four. [1:19] And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. [1:20] Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. [1:21] When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. [1:22] And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. [1:23] And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. [1:24] And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. [1:25] And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.

### Isaiah 6:1–7

King James Version.

> [6:1] In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. [6:2] Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. [6:3] And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. [6:4] And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. [6:5] Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. [6:6] Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: [6:7] And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

### Revelation 4:6–11

King James Version.

> [4:6] And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. [4:7] And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. [4:8] And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. [4:9] And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, [4:10] The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, [4:11] Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

### Exodus 25:18–22

King James Version.

> [25:18] And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. [25:19] And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. [25:20] And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. [25:21] And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. [25:22] And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.
