# Was Noah’s Flood Global or Local?

> Genesis 7 speaks of all the high hills under the whole heaven. Jesus and Peter treat the flood as real judgment. Christians disagree whether the water covered the planet or the land of the story.

Christians who confess the same creed disagree on the flood’s scope. [Genesis 7:19–20](/bible/genesis/7) says the waters prevailed and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. Local-flood readers take “earth” (*erets*) as the land of the narrative and point to Mesopotamian river floods. Global-flood readers take the language at planetary scope and read Peter’s comparison with the coming judgment of the whole world the same way. This page states both readings. It does not add a third verdict.

## Key Points

- [Genesis 6:17](/bible/genesis/6/17) and [Genesis 7:19–23](/bible/genesis/7) use total language: all flesh, all the high hills under the whole heaven, all in whose nostrils was the breath of life. [Genesis 9:11–15](/bible/genesis/9) ties the rainbow covenant to cutting off all flesh again by a flood.
- Hebrew *erets* can mean the earth or a land. Local-flood interpreters lean on that range. Global-flood interpreters answer that “under the whole heaven” and the covenant’s scope push past a valley flood.
- [Matthew 24:37–39](/bible/matthew/24) compares the days of Noah to the coming of the Son of man. [2 Peter 3:5–7](/bible/2-peter/3) sets the world that then was, overflowed with water, beside the present heavens and earth reserved for fire. [1 Peter 3:20](/bible/1-peter/3/20) names eight souls saved in the ark.
- Young-earth global-flood readings often place the event near Ussher’s date and read the fossil record as flood geology. Old-earth global or local readings refuse that geology. See [When Was Noah’s Flood?](/christianity/dating-noahs-flood) and [Is There Evidence of a Worldwide Flood?](/christianity/worldwide-flood-evidence).
- The [timeline](/timeline) records Mesopotamian flood traditions and deposits and says no layer is tied to Genesis. [(5)](#ref-5) That limit constrains archaeology. It does not by itself settle the exegesis.

## The Language of Genesis 7

[Genesis 7:19–20](/bible/genesis/7), King James Version: “And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.” Verse 23 says every living substance was destroyed from the earth, and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

Global-flood readers treat that as planetary. Local-flood readers note that Genesis can say “all the earth” for a wide region (as in famine texts) and that a Mesopotamian horizon could be “all” from the narrator’s ground. Both readings must still face [Genesis 9](/bible/genesis/9)’s covenant with every living creature and the promise that flesh will not again be cut off by a flood of waters.

## Jesus and Peter

[Matthew 24:37–39](/bible/matthew/24) does not pause to map coastlines. It treats Noah’s day as a pattern of ordinary life interrupted by sudden judgment. [2 Peter 2:5](/bible/2-peter/2/5) calls Noah a preacher of righteousness and speaks of the flood upon the world of the ungodly. [2 Peter 3:6](/bible/2-peter/3/6) says the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished, and verse 7 places the present heavens and earth in store for fire. Local-flood readers can take “world” as the inhabited order under judgment. Global-flood readers take Peter’s parallel with a future cosmic judgment as fixing a worldwide past flood. The disagreement is real and intra-Christian.

## How the Views Sit Beside Evidence

A local Mesopotamian flood fits more easily beside river silt at Shuruppak or Kish and beside Ryan and Pitman’s [Black Sea](/christianity/black-sea-deluge) hypothesis, without requiring a global fossil reset. A global flood requires either young-earth flood geology or a miracle that leaves little distinctive sedimentary signature modern geology accepts. [Is There Evidence of a Worldwide Flood?](/christianity/worldwide-flood-evidence) states what mainstream geology reports and what young-earth writers claim. This page’s job is the biblical scope question, not a second geology essay.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does “Earth” in Genesis 7 Mean the Planet?

Hebrew *erets* is flexible. The phrase “under the whole heaven” and the covenant language are why global readers are not moved by the lexicon alone. Local readers are not moved by English “earth” alone.

### Did Jesus Teach a Global Flood?

Jesus taught a real judgment in Noah’s day that mirrors his coming. He did not give a geography lecture. Global and local readers both claim him.

### What Do 1 Peter 3 and 2 Peter 3 Require?

They require a real flood, a real ark, and eight persons saved. Whether the water covered the Andes is the point under debate.
