# Do Catholics Believe Mary Was Sinless?

> Ineffabilis Deus in 1854 defines Mary as preserved from original sin at her conception. The Catechism adds that she remained free of every personal sin. An Orthodox clergy answer calls that definition foreign. Augsburg and Article IX speak of original sin in everyone naturally born.

Yes. The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception, and that she remained free of every personal sin her whole life. An Orthodox clergy answer calls the Immaculate Conception foreign, and the Augsburg Confession and the Anglican Article IX speak of original sin in everyone who is naturally born. This page quotes those texts. It does not decide. Perpetual virginity, the Assumption, and the question of worship are on [What Do Christians Believe About Mary?](/christianity/what-do-christians-believe-about-mary).

## Key Points

- [Ineffabilis Deus](https://www.papalencyclicals.net/pius09/p9ineff.htm) [(1)](#ref-1), 8 December 1854, defines Mary as preserved free from all stain of original sin “in the first instance of her conception,” by a grace granted in view of the merits of Jesus Christ.
- [Catechism 491](https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P1K.HTM) [(2)](#ref-2) prints that definition and says she was “preserved immune from all stain of original sin.” [Catechism 493](https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P1K.HTM) [(2)](#ref-2) says that “by the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.”
- An [Orthodox Church in America clergy answer](https://www.oca.org/questions/teaching/mary-prayer-death) [(3)](#ref-3) says she was “sinless of her own free will” and that the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is “foreign to Orthodox Christianity.” The page is not a synod.
- [Augsburg II](https://bookofconcord.cph.org/en/augsburg-confession/chief_articles/article_ii/) [(4)](#ref-4) teaches that “since the fall of Adam, all who are naturally born are born with sin.” [Article IX](https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/book-common-prayer/articles-religion) [(5)](#ref-5) says original sin is in “every person born into this world.”
- [Romans 5:12](/bible/romans/5/12) [(7)](#ref-7) says death passed upon all, “for that all have sinned.” [Luke 1:47](/bible/luke/1/47) [(6)](#ref-6) is Mary’s line, “God my Saviour.” [1 John 1:8](/bible/1-john/1/8) [(8)](#ref-8) says that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.

## What Ineffabilis Deus Defines

On 8 December 1854 Pope Pius IX defined the doctrine. The English on papalencyclicals.net, a third-party host, reads: [(1)](#ref-1)

> We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.

That host spells Savior. The bull presents the doctrine as revealed, and it attaches penalties to denying it in public. It does not give a year for the first time anyone taught the sentence. A sermon of Martin Luther on this 1854 definition was not fetched. The definition is later than Luther’s death.

[Catechism 491](https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P1K.HTM) [(2)](#ref-2) prints the same definition in the Holy See’s English and spells Saviour: preserved immune from all stain of original sin, from the first moment of her conception, by the merits of Jesus Christ. The next paragraph says that splendour “comes wholly from Christ” and that she is “redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son.” The Catechism’s longer pages on Mary as Mother of God, on perpetual virginity, and on the Assumption are quoted on [What Do Christians Believe About Mary?](/christianity/what-do-christians-believe-about-mary).

## Was Mary Sinless Her Whole Life?

The 1854 sentence is about original sin at conception. [Catechism 493](https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P1K.HTM) [(2)](#ref-2) adds the whole life: “By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.” The same paragraph says the Fathers of the Eastern tradition call her “the All-Holy” (Panagia) and celebrate her as “free from any stain of sin.”

That is the Catechism’s account of a life without personal sin. It is not a claim that she had no need of a Saviour. Paragraph 492, on the same page, says she is redeemed by the merits of her Son.

## What the Eastern Orthodox Clergy Answer Says

The [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/questions/teaching/mary-prayer-death) [(3)](#ref-3) answer is a clergy question-and-answer, not a synod:

> We believe that the Mother of God was sinless of her own free will, that she remains ever-virgin, and that she is the “living tabernacle” of God. With regard to certain teachings about the Mother of God held by other bodies, such as the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, such are foreign to Orthodox Christianity.

The same answer says Orthodox Christians seek her intercession and do not pray to her instead of God. Those sentences, and the Mastrantonis essay that says the Orthodox Church does not teach the immaculate conception, are on [What Do Christians Believe About Mary?](/christianity/what-do-christians-believe-about-mary) and [Eastern Orthodox vs Catholic](/christianity/eastern-orthodox-vs-catholic). This page does not repeat them in full.

## What Protestant Confessions Say

[Augsburg II](https://bookofconcord.cph.org/en/augsburg-confession/chief_articles/article_ii/) [(4)](#ref-4):

> Our churches teach that since the fall of Adam, all who are naturally born are born with sin, that is, without the fear of God, without trust in God, and with the inclination to sin, called concupiscence.

The article names [Romans 5:12](/bible/romans/5/12) [(7)](#ref-7). It does not name Mary. Readers set “all who are naturally born” beside a definition that one woman was preserved. The Catholic answer is the “singular grace” in the 1854 sentence, not a denial that the Augsburg article says “all.”

[Article IX](https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/book-common-prayer/articles-religion) [(5)](#ref-5) says original sin “is the fault and corruption of the Nature of every man, that naturally is ingendered of the offspring of Adam,” and that “in every person born into this world, it deserveth God’s wrath and damnation.” The page spells ingendered. It does not use the words Immaculate Conception. [What Do Anglicans Believe?](/anglican/what-do-anglicans-believe) quotes the Articles on other questions.

The Augsburg article on calling on the saints, and Article XXII on invocation, are about prayer, not about this definition. They are quoted on the Mary page.

## What the Bible Says

[Luke 1:28](/bible/luke/1/28) [(6)](#ref-6): “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” The verse calls her highly favoured and blessed among women. It does not use the words original sin.

[Luke 1:47](/bible/luke/1/47) [(6)](#ref-6): “And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Mary names God as her Saviour. The Catechism reads that with a redemption that preserved her. Readers who reject the definition read it as Mary counted among those who need a Saviour in the ordinary way.

[Romans 5:12](/bible/romans/5/12) [(7)](#ref-7): “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” The verse is about sin and death entering through Adam and passing upon all. It does not name Mary.

[1 John 1:8](/bible/1-john/1/8) [(8)](#ref-8): “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” The verse is about claiming to have no sin. It does not name Mary. The Catechism’s sentence is that she was preserved by grace, not that the verse is false.
